A stain guide for the holidays: how to remove stains from your holiday attire

December 24, 2009

The holidays mean dressing up and eating and drinking which can be the perfect combination for stains.  Here’s a quick how-to guide for removing stains:

  • Red Wine – If it’s red wine, wet a paper towel and blot with cool water. You can also use white wine to neutralize the stain or try club soda. Spot treat remaining stain with a laundry detergent and launder according to care label.
  • Candle Wax–   Scrape off as much hardened wax as possible, then place paper towels both over and under the stain and use a warm iron to melt remaining wax.  Or, place garment over a bowl of hot water and pour boiling water over the stain spot until stain is removed. Spot treat with laundry detergent and wash in the hottest water possible that is still safe for the fabric .
  • Chocolate – Pre-treat with stain-remover and work detergent in with fingers and let it stand for 20 minutes. Launder in the hottest water possible that is still safe for the fabric .
  • Fruit juices, cocktails – Wet a cloth with warm water and club soda and blot. Rinse in cool water.
  • Red Sauce Stains (Salsa, Cocktail Sauce, Spaghetti) –  Turn garment inside out and work from the “back of the stain” flushing it with cold water. Wet a sponge with white vinegar and sponge stain then rinse with cool water. Repeat as necessary to remove as much of the stain as possible.
  • Grease stains (Salad dressings) – Shake on talcum powder or cornstarch to soak up as much oil as possible and pre treat stain with a detergent. Let soak, the launder.

Don’t be caught unprepared! A take along stain remover like Shout® Wipes, or the Tide To Go® stain removal pen works wonders. Stock up and take it along with you to your next holiday party.

Maytag Clothes Washer shakes and does not balance loads

December 15, 2009

Question: My Maytag Clothes Washer, Model number pav2300aww, shakes and pulls the pressure fill line loose from the tub. The Maytag washing machine also does not balance the load when spinning. It is on a solid cement floor, so that is not the reason for the shake. How can I make it stop shaking?

Maytag Clothes Washer Snubber Ring location

Maytag Clothes Washer Snubber Ring location

Answer from The snubber ring at the base of the washer helps keep it from shaking.
I would remove the front of the washer and take a look at the snubber ring.

Gas in Kenmore Gas Clothes Dryer turns on and off, loses heat

December 11, 2009

Question: My Kenmore Gas Clothes Dryer, Model number 11072822101, cycles on and heats normally for about 5 – 10 minutes but when the gas cycles on it goes for about 10 seconds and then stops. After about   break a minute it then tries again. During this time the dryer tumbles and the blower blows normally, just no heat. I have opened up the dryer and cleaned it out and suspect that I must change out some sensor, but I don’t know which one to replace.

Answer: There are two small coils on the gas valve. There is a good chance that one of them is getting hot after awhile and stops working. Then after it cools down for a bit it works again.

The coils can be bought in a set and should both be replaced at the same time. Sometimes you can run the dryer until it stops heating, then feel the coils to see if one of them is getting hot or if you have an ohm meter, test it.

Kenmore Refrigerator icemaker producing crushed ice only

December 9, 2009

Question: I’m wondering if any of my fellow ice dispensing refrigerator owners has experienced the problem of their side-by-side Kenmore Refrigerator ice maker not going back to cubed ice? I’m stuck on crush and have been for a week. How do I get the icemaker to dispense cubed ice again?

Answer: There is an arm on the bottom of the ice container/bucket, #46 in the diagram, the control rod.

There is an arm on the bottom of the ice container/bucket, #46 in the diagram, the control rod. This rod slips into a slot in the back of the freezer and the rod moves up and down to switch from cubed to crushed.

Holiday meal preparation: baking and thawing

December 7, 2009

Emergency calls to appliance repair shops increase during the holidays due to the fact that more people are using their ovens to cook holiday meals and goodies. However, having an oven emergency December 24 is not practical as most repair shops can’t get the parts that you need.

One tip to avoid this type of emergency is to try cooking a batch of brownies in your oven. If the brownies come out fine, your oven is working properly.

If the brownies come out undercooked, here’s a few things that can be wrong with your oven:

Why doesn’t my electric oven bake?

Why does my electric oven temperature seem too hot or not hot enough?

Why is the electric oven temperature incorrect?

Why is my gas oven not baking?

A guide to freezing food (and saving money)

Many people love to save money by stocking up on food items that go on sale and freezing it for use at a later time.

The Washington Post has an excellent guide to freezing food which you can print out via PDF and post on your freezer or in your kitchen as a reminder.

Here are some tips from the story:

For faster freezing:

  • Set your freezer to the lowest setting several hours before adding large amounts of foods to the freezer.
  • Space items and packages out evenly, don’t stack them.

Thawing Frozen Items

In the refrigerator: allow one whole day for four pounds of poultry and a one-pound package of meet, two or more days for roasts, steaks or ham.

In cold water: Submerge food in a leak proof bag in a bowl of cold water. Allow 30 minutes per pound of whole poultry and one hour per pound of small packages of food.

In the microwave: Rotate and break up item into individual pieces to allow even thawing.

In the Oven: Add 50 percent additional time to the recommended cooking time of that item.
