Whirlpool Cries Foul at Foreign Competitors

September 7, 2012

Whirlpool American manufacturing under attack

Keeping in line with their previous claims, Whirlpool spoke with “The Courier” about the practice of “dumping” and how it is hurting their American sales, which they fear will hurt their overall sales internationally. Whirlpool has a significant presence in America, and therefore competitors like LG and Samsung have stepped up their game in order to beat out Whirlpool’s prices. This is not a new song being sung by Whirlpool, but considering this is the third time they have filed complaints, it seems that there is an extreme sense of urgency regarding their foreign competitors.

Who cares? We all should. Whirlpool is still the largest appliance manufacturer in the world and if “dumping” is truly occurring, it does not simply mean that a big corporation will crumble. It means that you, the consumer, will suffer overall. For those that are not aware, the practice of “dumping” is just about as lovely as it sounds. “Dumping” occurs when foreign competitors will sell products at much lower prices than their competitors, however their prices become unfair because they are selling them from different countries with different labor costs, leaving American manufacturing in the dust.

This needs to be seen in the eye of the “snowball effect.” Simply put, if Whirlpool is truly the victim of “dumping” than the industry, which is an international one, will suffer causing international sales to suffer. This perverse lack of competition is not the proper way to under-cut a competitor, and it leaves much to be desired for the consumer. “Dumping” occurs simply to steal customers, weaken one’s competitor, and then raise prices once that competitor is out of business.

Essentially, we need to become aware of where we are buying our products from. It seems so exhausting and possibly trivial to even care however we are in an age where a continued pattern of actions can have lasting effects in the decades to come, with those lasting effects being ones we don’t exactly enjoy. Stay sharp, folks, and keep educating yourself on these practices and just where you are buying your product from.

Money-Saving Tips for Buying a Clothes Dryer, Pt. II

August 30, 2012

Having the knowledge about what you are buying can make all the difference

Last week we began a series on how to save some money when purchasing a dryer for your home, and essentially, as a consumer, the most important point to take away is that you must be informed. Being informed can mean the difference in hundreds of dollars simply by knowing and understanding exactly what you need for your home and what may be a whimsical addition that will empty your wallet. Last week we discussed understanding the energy costs of a dryer and how important it is to read the energy labels before purchasing.

This week we will focus on some “must-haves” when purchasing a dryer, and what you should look for and expect when making your purchase. First, you will want to find a dryer that has sensors to detect moisture or dryness, or allows you to custom select different settings, such as regular, more dry, or less dry. This may seem trivial but actually proves invaluable in reducing drying time and therefore saving energy use. Saving energy then results in less money you are spending monthly, and our aim is always to reduce spending and bolster savings. Again, mainstream producers like Whirlpool and GE are always strong producers to consider, however it always helps to make the informed decision. Continuing on this, looking for temperature controls can allow for High Quick Dry for some fabrics, and can also allow for Low or Fluff for delicates. Also, a permanent press or press care dryer setting provides a cool-down period at the end of the cycle, which reduces wrinkles considerably, and thus will save you time and energy on ironing. Finally, having a dryer drum light is a must, and yet this does not always seem to be a standard feature on some so we urge you to check for this before purchasing.

Folks, bottom line we are just simply trying to make you more aware of what it is that you are buying. Many times we take buying major home appliances for granted as a mundane process, however that complacency can result in spending money that does not need to be spent. Happy buying and stay informed!

“Electro-Fed” Provides Wealth of Information for Consumers

August 10, 2012

New report allows for consumers to stay current and aware of all industrial news

In a world where information is power, The Electro-Federation of Canada has provided consumers with an opportunity to stay aware and current in all things industrial related. We can never have too much information and in a time where the economy is not entirely stable there can be no substitute for staying current and aware in order to protect purchasing integrity.

Electro-Fed has newly added, along with the Canadian Appliance Manufacturers’ Association, a 2012 report that will give indications to consumers on which products and producers to purchase from and where each producer is standing, financially, in order to give the consumer a more detailed picture of the producer they might consider purchasing from. This report includes data on historical unit sales, provincial sales, feature trends, and seasonality charts for seven major appliance categories from major producers. These producers include Whirlpool, Samsung and Electrolux just to name a few.

This report will prove to be a major asset to consumers in the future and it is incredibly impressive to see this open exchange of information occurring so freely. Granted, there may be information that might not be presented in its entirety, however this is much more than consumers are used to getting. Typically, the hunt for detailed information can never be found in one place and can require some serious legwork on the side of the consumer. Now, with this new report by the CAMA, consumers can obtain most information that they are looking for in one location.

This will even the proverbial playing field in the sense that an informed consumer is always better for the the economy in the long run. Essentially, a “trigger-happy” consumer may bolster business in the short-term but there is no substitute for the consistent business an informed consumer can give. Basically, producers and consumers alike should be grateful for Electro-Fed’s release of information to the general public because it will create a unique harmony that others should learn to adopt.

Electro-Fed has given a unique perspective to the general consumer that is not usually seen. Canadian customers should jump on this opportunity and use the information given to them to make more informed purchases in the future.
